Privacy Policy

This site is the personal publication of John Addison Teevan. It is not a business; it sells nothing, and it runs no advertising. This page explains what information the site collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written in plain language rather than legal boilerplate, because a policy nobody reads protects nobody.

What this site collects

Your email address, if you choose to give it

The only information you are ever asked to provide is an email address, submitted through the subscribe form. Nothing else is requested — no name, no address, no phone number. It is used for one purpose: sending you new essays as they are published.

Subscriptions are managed through Mailchimp, an email service operated by Intuit. Your address is stored on Mailchimp’s systems in the United States. Like most email services, Mailchimp records whether a message was opened and whether a link in it was clicked, which is used only to see whether the mailing is working. Every message includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes your address from the list.

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics to understand how many people visit and which essays are read. It reports patterns in aggregate — how many visitors arrived, which pages they read, roughly what part of the world they came from, and whether they arrived from a search engine, a link, or an email.

Google Analytics sets cookies and processes information including your IP address. It is used here to measure readership, not to identify individual readers, and the data is not used for advertising. Google processes this information under its own privacy policy, and you can opt out of Google Analytics entirely in any browser using Google’s official opt-out add-on.

Security and server records

Like nearly every website, this one keeps automatic technical records. The web host records standard server information, and a security plugin records login attempts and requests it blocks. These records can include your IP address, the type of browser and device you are using, the pages you requested, and the time of the visit.

This information is collected automatically, is not used to build a profile of you, and is not used for marketing. Its purpose is keeping the site online and defending it against attacks.

Cookies

Two kinds of cookies are used here. Functional cookies are those WordPress and the page builder require in order to display pages correctly. Analytics cookies are set by Google Analytics to measure readership, as described above.

There are no advertising cookies and no third-party marketing trackers. You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time; the site will still work.

What this site does not do

• Your information is never sold, rented, or traded.
• There are no advertising networks and no ad tracking.
• Analytics are used to count readership, not to profile individual readers.
• There are no visitor accounts, and comments are closed, so neither collects anything.

Who else can see your information

A small number of service providers necessarily handle data in order for the site to function:

• The web host stores the site and its server logs.
• Mailchimp stores the subscriber list and delivers the newsletter.
• Google Analytics processes visit data to produce readership statistics.
• The security plugin processes request and login data to block attacks.

Each handles only what its function requires. None is given access to your information for its own marketing.

How long information is kept

Email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe or ask to be removed, at which point the address is deleted from the mailing list. Analytics data is retained according to Google’s standard retention period. Security and server logs are kept only for a limited period before being overwritten in the ordinary course of maintenance.

Your choices

You may unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email. You may opt out of Google Analytics using Google’s browser add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser. You may also write and ask what information is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Requests are honored.

Readers in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and certain U.S. states have additional rights under local law, including rights of access, correction, deletion, and portability. Those rights are respected regardless of where you live.

Content from other sites

Essays sometimes include images, video, or quoted material hosted elsewhere. Embedded content from another site behaves as though you had visited that site directly, and those sites have their own privacy practices, which this policy does not govern.

Children

This site is written for an adult readership. It is not directed at children under 13, and no information is knowingly collected from them.

Changes to this policy

If the site begins collecting anything it does not collect today, this page will be updated before that change takes effect, and the date below will change.
